Hydrogen sulfide gas is usually the cause of rotten egg smells in tap water. This colorless, corrosive gas produces the sulfur odor often found in well water. It forms naturally when organic material breaks down without oxygen, especially in groundwater near shale, sandstone, coal deposits, or oil fields.
Sulfur-reducing bacteria are another common cause. They grow in low-oxygen environments like water heaters and plumbing systems, converting sulfates into hydrogen sulfide gas and creating a strong sulfur smell in your water.
